The Irving-based Boy Scouts of America realized something important recently: Kids don't climb trees anymore.
They don't hike, or explore muddy riverbanks, or spend lazy summers camping in the back yard.
Kids are online, electronically connected, and their time is in digital demand.
This morning, the Boy Scouts of America is rolling out a high-bandwidth plan to re-connect with the nation's youth. It's a plan that's already had repercussions: More than 40 employees at the national office lost their jobs last month.

Join Scouting Kickoff!!!

This fall, all 12 Boy Scout Councils across the state of Michigan are collaborating together for our Cub Scout Roundup campaign. The coordinated effort will result in more than 25,000 youth being welcomed into scouting! Locally, throughtout the 19 counties served by the Lake Huron Area Council we expect to recruit a record number of new Cub Scouts and hope to surpass 2,000 new youth and parents.
Keith Pretty, President and CEO of Northwood University, and an Eagle Scout, will serve as the Honorary Cub Round Up Chair for the Lake Huron Area Council. A special website www.joinscoutingmichigan.org has been created for the statewide campaign that will provide easily accessible contact and sign up resources for youth and parents. Please pass the website address along to friends, neighbors and co-workers that have Scout-aged children. A very creative and fun new joining incentive will be unveiled at the kickoff meetings. The incentive is sure to excite prospective youth to join. All youth whose paid youth applications are submitted by Friday, October 10, 2008, to the Council Service Center will be eligible to receive the joining incentive. This deadline will require Packs to schedule their local roundups (at schools, churches and other local community sites) for the month of September. This deadline will enable a "final report" that will be shared on October 15th with media statewide. We hope you will help inspire volunteers and parents to help welcome a record number of new youth.
Each district will host a kickoff meeting in conjunction with the August Program Kickoff meetings to launch the round up effort. Units are strongly encouraged to send multiple representatives to the meeting so that you can hear firsthand the changes in both the round up campaign but also the product sale. Separate breakout meetings will be held for each of these topics and attendance is required for the unit to receive the maximum product sale commission this fall. Food, fellowship and fun will all be a part of the kickoff meeting.
If your unit is inable to participate in your specific district's kickoff (August 20, 6pm at the Council Service Center), you are welcome to attend any of the other kickoff's or the "make-up" meeting at the Council Service Center scheduled for August 21.
Thanks for all your wonderful support of scouting. If you have any questions or need more information about the round-up effort, please call DE Ben Evans at 662-4464 ext. 217.

Our local Midland Jack Barstow Airport’s non-profit pilot’s organization is hosting the historic Ford Tri-Motor airplane from a museum in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. This will be a rare opportunity to take a Ride Back into History. The Ford Tri-Motors were built between 1926 and 1933 and were the very first passenger airliners in the world. There are only 5 of them presently flyable.

The National Council of the Boy Scouts of America commissioned a study of itself by McKinsey & Company. Part of this study was a thorough review of the organizational structure which resulted in the creation of a new framework for the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America. In a letter to the Council Scout Executives, Robert J. Mazzuca, Chief Scout Executive, stated “throughout this process, our vision has been to focus on building the BSA’s brand and increase the capacity of our councils to be successful.”
